Laura McCann, PhD

I am a faculty lecturer jointly appointed in the Department of English and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. My teaching spans multi-modal communication practices across technical disciplines, focusing on writing and presenting as teachable skillsets, rather than inherent identities.

My research investigates how people facing medical problems (like a disease diagnosis) or pursuing scientific work navigate the communicative tasks (communicating with care providers or applying for grants) that accompany their medical and scientific problems.

Research Interests: the rhetoric of health and medicine; infertility discourse; feminist rhetorics; digital & networked rhetoric; narrative analysis; professional and technical writing.
